March 8, 2004: Lars is born! 12:07 a.m. He weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces, and was almost 21 inches long. Gestation was 42 weeks and 5 days.

Labor was 28 hours, with 3 1/2 hours of pushing at the end. It was totally empowering and perfect, with no doctors, no hospitals, no medical interventions, and absolutely no drugs. It was expertly attended by two amazing and fabulous midwives--Emily and Valaree--and happened at the Birthplace at Wellesley, a wonderful free-standing, privately-owned birth center. Andey and dear friends Carylbeth & Denise were there, and Kali was there taking care of Joa (they slept through the delivery, and came in shortly afterwards).

We were home by noon that day.

For more pregnancy pictures, see history.

*p.s. Although "Lars" looks like it would rhyme with "mars" and "cars," it doesn't. We're pronouncing it with a softer "s" at the end, rather than a "z" sound.
